How did OISE alum Rosemary Sadlier convince Canada to recognize Black History Month?

CBC is celebrating 7 Black Canadian writers this #BlackHistoryMonth. Among them is С������Ƶ communications officer Perry King.

Dr. Amal Madibbo has lived a life deeply immersed in Black Studies.

Whether it was during her schooling-socialization as she grew up in Sudan, to her years of academic practice in Europe and North America, the newly arrived С������Ƶ faculty has lived the material and wants to bring new insight as she begins her time as associate professor at the department of social justice education.

“My engagement with Black Studies is a long process, a lengthy process, both as a student and as an educator that started since the early stages of my social upbringing,” said Dr. Madibbo, who returns to С������Ƶ, University of Toronto – where she completed her doctoral studies.

IEN marked its recent 30th anniversary by re-centring and reasserting a commitment to relationships with Black, Indigenous, and Black-Indigenous people.

Black students must matter — and conversations about Black identities, culture, and history should happen year-round, says PhD student Tanitiã Munroe.

С������Ƶ doctoral student Osholene Oshobugie uses education as a tool to combat systemic racism and build resilience among young people of African descent.

When it comes to outdoor recreation, the conservation industry, even the climate change movement, “there are barriers based in the legacies of history,” she explains. “We don’t see ourselves advertised. They don’t have Black people on staff. It sends a clear message that if you’re Black, this isn’t your space.”
