"Language attitudes and (in)effectiveness of language learning: the case of Russian-speaking students in Estonia"

The paper analyzes the situation with learning Estonian and English as second languages by Russian speaking students in Estonia and the ways language attitudes of teachers, students and their families may impact this process. Monolingual mindset, still dominant in language ideology, creates barriers to successful language acquisition and leads to social exclusion of minority language speakers, and overcoming this challenge is an important task for language practitioners.

Kapitolina Fedorova
Kapitolina Fedorova, Professor of Russian Studies, School of Humanities, Tallinn University, graduated from St. Petersburg State University (Russian and General Linguistics), 1999, and European University at St. Petersburg (Department of Ethnology) in 2001 and has a PhD in philology (2002). In 2003-2018 she worked at European University at St. Petersburg and then at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul, South Korea. Since 2020, works at Tallinn University, Estonia. Natalia TÅ¡uikina
Natalia TÅ¡uikina, Associate Professor of Russian, School of Humanities, Tallinn University graduated from St. Petersburg University (Department of Russian Philology) in 1996 and has a PhD in philology (2000). Since 2002, she has worked at Tallinn University. Research interests: linguistic creativity, linguistic landscape, language and culture, bilingualism, Russian as a foreign and a heritage language.
