Black students must matter — and conversations about Black identities, culture, and history should happen year-round, says PhD student Tanitiã Munroe.

С������Ƶ doctoral student Osholene Oshobugie uses education as a tool to combat systemic racism and build resilience among young people of African descent.

When it comes to outdoor recreation, the conservation industry, even the climate change movement, “there are barriers based in the legacies of history,” she explains. “We don’t see ourselves advertised. They don’t have Black people on staff. It sends a clear message that if you’re Black, this isn’t your space.”

An assistant professor in С������Ƶ’s Department of Applied Psychology and Human Development and the lead researcher on the study, concluded that there was a link between social isolation and worsening mental health among university students.

A member of С������Ƶ’s faculty, Professor Doug McDougall, has been named one of two recipients of the 2020 JJ Berry Smith Doctoral Supervision Award.

This School of Graduate Studies award recognizes outstanding performance in the multiple roles associated with doctoral supervision – including Doctor of Philosophy, Doctor of Education, Doctor of Musical Arts and Doctor of Juridical Science programs. Two awards are offered annually: one in the Humanities and Social Sciences and one in the Physical and Life Sciences. University Professor Ted Sargent was awarded in the latter category.

Professor McDougall is the third С������Ƶ faculty recognized with this award since the honour was established in 2013. Dr. Clare Kosnik, from the department of Curriculum, Teaching & Learning, was recognized in 2014. Dr. Judith Wiener, from the department of Applied Psychology & Human Development, won in 2017.

Mariam Abeid spent much of her life seeking an education only to encounter one obstacle after another. Now, the mother of three is set to become an educator herself.
